Eating on a budget

Updated: Oct 5, 2019

Eating healthy can be expensive. I know!

But, there are ways to overcome one of the biggest challenges that may interfere with your choices, money.

You're not alone though. I've created this blog to give you some tips on how you can make healthy choices on a budget.

1. PLAN AHEAD

Every been grocery shopping on an empty stomach? Or shopped when you were tired and came home with convenience foods because you just could be bothered? Planning ahead is crucial. Make a list of meals you want for the week. Go to the shops after you've recently eaten. Only buy what you need!

2. EAT AT HOME

A meal at a fancy restaurant could be the cost of a weeks worth of groceries. So, instead of splurging on the meal you're craving- make it at home!

3. BUY FRESH

There seems to be a common stigma around discretionary (packaged) foods being more expensive than fresh. BUT, packaged foods add up. Instead of spending $4.99 for a pack of 5 muesli bars, spend $4.99 on a kg of banana (these also help with digestion, moderate blood sugar, heart health and the list goes on!)

4. STOCK UP ON SALES

Anyone ever been to the supermarket late in the afternoon? Notice they have 'clearance' foods?! Stock up! Most of these have days worth of good left. Look for items on sale, and always pick those over foods that aren't.

5. LOWER YOUR MEAT INTAKE

I know, you LOVE meat. But, if you're eating on a budget, make a few swaps (that doesn't mean get rid of it together). Try adding canned tuna, eggs, seeds, beans, legumes. All have great health benefits and are cheaper than cuts of meat.

6. BUY FROZEN VEGETABLES

Frozen vegetables are usually just as nutritious as fresh, AND they last longer. So, stock up on large backs (cheaper in bulk) to add to meals.

7. DITCH THE DAILY CAFE COFFEE

I used to spend $4.99 each day on coffee. That is, lets say $35 I could have spent on fresh produce! Supermarkets not stock pre made 'cafe style coffee' which obviously wont be as good, but it still satisfies the cravings. Get on it!

8.GROW GROW GROW

That's right, GROW! Buy some seeds, grow some herbs, grow carrots, onions, tomatoes- anything you are able to keep alive!

So lets make some changes to save some money :)
